Pouring Piece
Pouring Piece is an open, interactive performance where viewers are asked to participate in a group pouring, four people at a time.
Participants use laboratory-esque cylinders to fill their individual ewers with water, then pour across the table into a receiving bowl and then pour from the receiving bowl back into the tall cylinder.
This cyclical action feels simultaneously like a solitary endeavor and like a choreographed group performance.
Instructions for each action are printed on a separate sheet of paper and placed on a music stand. A “director” displays the instructions, sheet by sheet.
This work establishes a new ritual where all participants have access to the information they need in order to partake in the ceremony.
